‘Kyphosis’ or more technically ‘hyper-kyphosis’ is an exaggerated hunching of the spine also known as hunchback or Dowager’s hump. Although hyperkyphosis typically develops slowly and over many years, it becomes obvious to other people often before an individual becomes aware of it themselves.

This postural deterioration has serious health consequences. Not only will excessive hunching compress the vital internal organs such as the heart and lungs, it will put relentless pressure on the spine and contribute to arthritis, as well as compress and pinch the spinal cord and nerves causing a variety of possible bodily symptoms.

The ultimate evaluation of this poor hunching posture was done by UCLA’s Dr. Deborah Kado, MD and colleagues.1 They determined that those with hunched posture had a 2.4x greater chance of dying from atherosclerosis, a 1.8x greater chance of dying from cancer, a 2.4x greater chance of dying from pulmonary causes, and a 1.4x greater chance of dying from any other disease1 – very serious health consequences! Fix your posture!
