Scoliosis is a condition characterized by an abnormal curvature of the spine and can affect people of all ages. The most common scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis which is most commonly found among children between the age group of 10 to 16 years. While scoliosis can vary from mild to moderate, and severe to highly severe, we often come across concerns about if scoliosis worsens with age.
Yes, scoliosis can worsen with age as scoliosis is progressive and is not a static condition. The number of growth years left for a child and the rate at which the child is growing are the two main factors that significantly influence the progress of scoliosis. The faster the growth, the higher the risk and chances of scoliosis getting worse. This is because of age-related spinal degeneration. In the initial years of growth, scoliosis is mild but when children hit their pre-pubertal or puberty growth spurt, the conditions of scoliosis worsen. In children, scoliosis leads to postural deviation. However, in adults, scoliosis does lead to posture deviation along with pains in the body. It’s more of pain as in adulthood, scoliosis turns into a compressive condition wherein the surrounding muscles and nerves of the spine compress causing conditions leading to pain.
How Can I Know If My Child Has Scoliosis?
Among children, scoliosis can be identified through postural deviation. You witness your child developing an asymmetrical body, wherein:
- The shoulders or hips are not at one level or are uneven. When shoulders are asymmetric, one shoulder blade is more prominent than another.
- One of the rib cages is jetting forward which is the development of a rib arch.
- Arms or legs are hanging at different lengths.
- At the time of bending forward, one side of the back is more prominent than another.
- Uneven eye line.
If you witness a combination of any of these problems, then there is a high possibility of scoliosis. Also, having any single asymmetry in the body doesn’t guarantee scoliosis, still, you can get a physical examination once to clear all doubts. After a physical examination, you won’t require any further tests for the same. In contrast when you witness a combination of problems, then it’s a clear sign to visit an orthopedic specialist who can guide you toward the future course of action. When there is a minor curvature (mild to moderate scoliosis), it can usually be corrected with the right set of treatments and professional care.
